About Michael S. Sachs Nancy and I were together for thirty-five years, the second half of her life. We went to concerts, operas, art exhibitions and movies in New York, and then spent weeks at a time with the most traditional peoples we could reach in remote regions of Africa and Indonesia. Nancy was fiercely independent. Socially adept, she talked with everyone. Remarkably, when she spoke to you there was no ego showing; it was all about you; perhaps that is what made it possible for her subjects to open up to her in the course of a one hour session. In her work there were three elements: the subject, the photographic image, and the photographer. No one else was permitted to participate; the closest I got was the garage at the Supreme Court. Similarly, she did not show her pictures to others or even mention them, wanting not to be consumed by chit-chat about the cultural icons she documented. At the age of 88, I am racing against time to foster a lasting legacy for her work. In addition, I am assembling a collection of 19th-century photographs for the Israel Museum, and preserving the largest collection of watercolors, drawings, prints and sculptures by M.C. Escher.
The Magnes does not operate its own parking lot. Two- and four-hour metered street parking is available throughout downtown Berkeley, payable by credit or debit card.
